Windows Server's larest Preview Build 26296 makes VM environments the safest they've ever been so far

Windows Server Insiders are in for a treat as Microsoft has announced the release of the new build of the upcoming Windows Server Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) Preview.

This new build, specifically Build 26296, includes both the Desktop Experience and Server Core installation options for the Datacenter and Standard editions, the Annual Channel for Container Host, and the Azure Edition, which is only for VM evaluation.

The company notes that the new build comes with updated branding for the upcoming release, Windows Server 2025. As such, testers should refer to the Windows Server 2025 preview when reporting issues. The build will be made available automatically for those with Server Flighting enabled.

The new build introduces the Windows Server 2025 Security Baseline Preview, which allows testers to apply a range of recommended security settings for VM roles directly from the Windows Admin Center.

The security baseline includes over 350 settings organized across three categories: Domain Controller (DC), Member Server, and Workgroup Member.

Also new in Build 26296 is the ability for Windows Server 2025 preview customers to download and install Windows Admin Center from the Windows Server Desktop using the in-OS app.

There are a few known issues to be aware of, including one where the Sysprep tool, which generalizes a Windows installation for imaging, isn’t working correctly in the new build.

Additionally, the label for the latest flight may incorrectly reference Windows 11. However, when selected, Microsoft says the package installed is the Windows Server update.

In other news, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) will be officially deprecated next year.
